2020-21 Welcome!

July 30, 2020

Dear Cougar Family,

On behalf of the Hungary Creek faculty and staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2020 – 2021 school year. We hope that you are enjoying your summer break, but we sure do miss our Cougars and are excited to think about September and their return, even though it will start out virtually!!! We are working hard this summer to plan a great debut of our theme, #CougarsTogether.  Throughout the year we will find creative ways to infuse this theme into our different teaching and learning opportunities.

Below, I have provided some information highlighting a few items and will continue to update you over the next few weeks as more information becomes available regarding the school year.

Planning for 2020-2021 School Year

The HCPS school board voted last Thursday for Virtual Learning for the 1st 9 weeks. Our teachers and staff have been participating in additional professional development webinars and courses to prepare for the virtual opening of school. We will be ready to support all of our Cougars this fall!!!  Please visit HCPS 2020-21 Mission Forward at https://henricoschools.us/returntoschool/  to learn more about online learning for the first 9 weeks.

Computers for Rising 7th and 8th Graders – Reminder

To improve engagement and learning with peers and teachers in the 20 – 21 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will be activating the cameras on secondary laptops for middle and high school students.  To activate the camera, the laptop needs to be serviced at the student’s home school.  The total time to perform the work is about 5-10 minutes.

At each secondary school, the technical support staff will be available to re-configure secondary laptops for middle and high school students in preparation for the 20/21 school year.

When:    Monday – Thursday

Time:      8:30 AM – 12 PM and 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Each location will practice safety precautions for COVID-19.  The technical support staff will be wearing masks and practicing additional safety precautions.  Each person that arrives to have their HCPS laptop serviced is requested to wear a mask and to practice social distancing.  Each line will have tape on the floor about 8 feet apart to help with social distancing.

Only one individual (parent, student, or guardian) should enter the school to receive service.  The only thing that is needed to be brought in to complete the work is the laptop to be reconfigured (no charger, no username/password).

The location at the school to go to for the activation of the laptop camera is the Front door, main foyer in front of the library. This support at each school to reconfigure secondary student laptop cameras will continue into August up until the start of school.

Computers for Rising 6th Graders

We have just received information that computers will be delivered in the first week of August for our rising 6th graders. We are looking at distributing them the week of August 10th and we will be back in touch next week to notify you of the distribution process, including dates and times.

Yearbooks

For our rising 7th and 8th graders, we have received information from the distributor that our delivery should be the week of August 10th.  Once we have finalized the distribution dates, we will notify you of our distribution process and schedule.

Schedules Clarification

July 17, 2020
Cougars,

Yesterday, a draft version of student schedules for the 2020-2021 school year were inadvertently made available via PowerSchool when the data rollover from last year to this year went live.

The schedules are still in draft mode and ARE NOT FINAL. The schedules are likely to change before the start of the school year – especially once the HCPS School Board votes on the Return to School Plan (scheduled vote is Thursday, July 23). Again, the schedules ARE NOT FINAL.

If possible, please refrain from contacting our School Counselors or Administrators about this issue. We will be working on the schedules up until they are distributed later in August.

It is our understanding the schedules are no longer available on PowerSchool.

Have a great day!!!

Summer Season – Pathway 5

July 14, 2020
Cougars,

I am writing with an important reminder about summer review, enrichment, and remediation opportunities for your student. As part of the Henrico County Summer Season, we are offering robust activities in English, math, science, and social studies for your student to continue learning in a meaningful way this summer. These enrichment activities will be available from July 13 until August 6.

English – We want to make sure students are working beyond the summer reading this year.  As such, we will be providing activities across the literacy spectrum so that students can have an enriching experience this summer.

Math – Everyone IS a math person and every day we use math. Come join us and discover just how much it’s used. You will find activities that are relevant, engaging, and downright FUN.

Science – Science is all around us and summer is a great time to use what you learned last school year and explore more about an area of science. Science EdFlix activities will satisfy your curiosity and allow you to explore more science!

Social Studies – Have you been stuck at home for months on end? Tired of things being closed? Check out the offerings for Social Studies, and you will get to explore Richmond and the world.

Please visit our EdFlix site in order to find opportunities. It’s always a good idea for all students to participate in summer learning, but it’s even more important this summer. Please take a moment to review the summer opportunities for your student.

Have a great day!!!
